If the tread pattern of the tyre has a cut along the circumference of the tyre that comes in contact with the road (point contact), it is to decreases the resistance offered and so easy steering of the vehicle.
If the tread pattern of the tyre has a cut perpendicular(across) to the tyre's circumference i.e. perpendicular to the direction of motion of the vehicle (line contact), it is responsible to increases the thrust force.
