🔍 What Is a Spanner Size?

Spanner size refers to the width across flats (AF) — the distance between two parallel sides of a bolt or nut head. It's the size printed on a spanner or wrench and matches the nut size or bolt head size it is intended for.

📏 In practice:

An M10 bolt requires a 17 mm spanner

A 3/8” bolt needs a 9/16” spanner

📘 Standards vary slightly by region:

Metric (ISO, DIN)

Imperial (inch) – commonly used in the US and oil & gas equipment
