The single-barrel ShKAS (Shpitalny-Komaritsky Aircraft High-Speed Machine Gun) developed in the Soviet Union was capable of firing an astonishing 1,800 rounds per minute. Developed in the 1930s, the ShKAS was termed the first purpose-built aircraft gun.
