Functions of back vane/ pump out vane:

1. Pushes liquid of the back of the impeller and helps lower the pressure acting on the back of the impeller, this reduces the axial thrust
2. Mecahanical seal has to work against a lower pressure, this ensures better sealing.
3. Abrasive materials at the back of the impeller can be pumped out, protecting the impeller.
