Pyrolysis
heaters are similar to steam/methane-reforming heaters. The same
materials are often used for both. There are a few notable
differences. Both Ys and U-bends are used in pyrolysis heaters and
suffer erosion. The reaction in the tubes is usually carburizing and
requires that the surfaces be smooth from boring or honing and that
the material be more resistant to carburization. The material used in
pyrolysis heaters is often a modification of a high-strength material
that is adequate in reforming heaters.
