In Malta, where a large share of the residential water is supplied  through energy-intensive desalinization, electricity and water prices  are both closely linked and on the rise. As usable groundwater supplies  diminish and energy prices soar, the country is faced with a growing  water-energy dilemma. The tech experts at IBM have proposed a novel  solution: building a 70 million Euro multi-utility smart grid system—the  first of its kind.
